Metropolitan Archdiocese of Kuala Lumpur

Archkl.org is the official website for The Roman Catholic Metropolitan Archdiocese of Kuala Lumpur (ArchKL), an ecclesiastical territory of the Roman Catholic Church in Malaysia.

The Archdiocese was erected as the diocese of Kuala Lumpur by Pope Pius XII on 25th February 1955. The diocese was elevated to the rank of a Metropolitan Archdiocese on 18th December 1972, with the suffragan sees of Melaka-Johor and Penang. It also administers the capital of Malaysia, Kuala Lumpur and the states of Selangor, Negeri Sembilan, Pahang, and Terengganu. The Archdiocese's Mother Church and, thus, the seat of its Archbishop is Catedral of St. John.

Challenges

The website is highly sought after mainly by all the Catholics residing within the Archdiocese. Essential information about the Archbishop, his initiatives, and what the Archdiocese offers is also missing from the old website, which went down in late 2011. The challenge was to display all the critical relevant information such as parishes, retreat locations, and events within the Archdiocese and make it accessible to all Catholics.

Approach

Our approach is to keep the maintenance of the site together with the regular updates low. Website pages were modernised based on clicks and info gathered from Delphi's grouping. Linux server is powering the entire website.

Solutions

We used a standard open source Content Management System (CMS) to power the website. Rigid directory systems built in to display key important facts - Parishes, Educational Institutions, and Retreat Locations. At the same time, calendars were powered through the Google platform. For the first time, the Clergy directory is built together with the local intranet, which assists all the priests within the Archdiocese to communicate effectively, allowing them to transfer documents and messages across this web-based intranet platform.

Results

Basic statistics show that unique visitors grew from 54 in July 2013 to 155,800 unique visitors as of July 2018. The highest number of sought-after info starts from Parish locations to the clergy serving within the Archdiocese, general information such as what's shaping up within the diocese, Living Faith which consists of sermons from the Vatican to the local priest, and Archdiocese key programmes.
